The Mitchell Mold & Mycotoxin Protocol: A Doctor's 3-Step Path to Recovery

You've had the bloodwork. You've seen the specialists. And you still don't have an answer for why you feel this way. For a lot of patients dealing with mold and mycotoxin exposure, that's exactly how it starts: months or years of symptoms with no clear diagnosis. Most doctors simply aren't trained to look for mold. That's the real reason it takes so long to get diagnosed, not because the illness is rare, but because almost nobody is checking for it.

Just over ten years ago, Dr. Dean Mitchell, MD, knew nothing about mold. As he puts it, "more than 10 years ago, I knew nothing about this field. And it was really sort of a combination of serendipity and coming across some very interesting articles that got me interested in this area of CIRS and toxic mold." That chance discovery changed the direction of his career. Today, mold and mycotoxin illness make up roughly half of the patients he treats.

Along the way, Dr. Mitchell credits Dr. Neil Nathan and Dr. Jill Crista as mentors who helped shape his approach. Drawing on what he's learned, he developed a structured, phase-based protocol specifically for mold and mycotoxin illness, one he uses directly with his own patients. It's not a quick fix, and it's not guesswork. It's a methodical approach built around a simple idea: healing from mold takes time, and the body needs to be supported in the right order.

Here's a breakdown of how the Mitchell Mold & Mycotoxin Protocol works, step by step.

Why Mold Exposure Is So Often Missed

Symptoms of mold and mycotoxin illness can overlap with other chronic conditions: fatigue, brain fog, sinus issues, joint pain, anxiety, and more. Because of that overlap, patients often see multiple doctors before mold is ever considered as the root cause. It usually takes a doctor who is experienced with mold and mycotoxin illness to recognize the pattern and know what to test for.

That's part of why having a clear, organized protocol matters. It gives patients and their providers a roadmap instead of a guessing game.

Step 1: The Fundamentals Phase (Days 1-45)

As Dr. Mitchell puts it, "treating mold is not a sprint, it's a marathon." The first phase of the protocol isn't about aggressive treatment. It's about building a foundation the body can actually heal from.

This phase focuses on:

  • Avoidance. Doing everything possible to leave the moldy environment, since continued exposure undermines any treatment.
  • The fundamentals. Reestablishing a circadian sleep rhythm (roughly 7am to 11pm), regular bowel movements, and proper hydration (about half your body weight in ounces of water daily).
  • Vitamin support. Intensive IV vitamin therapy with high-dose Vitamin C, antioxidants, and glutathione to help the body detoxify.
  • Nervous system regulation. Vagal and limbic retraining programs to calm the body's stress response, which is often dysregulated in chronic mold illness.
  • An anti-mold diet. Avoiding sugar, dairy, wheat, alcohol, high-histamine foods, leftovers, and fermented foods.
  • A mold inspection. Identifying and addressing the actual source of exposure, since no protocol works if the exposure continues.

The guiding principle of this phase is simple: "the solution to pollution is dilution." Before the body can fight mold, it needs support, structure, and space to recover.

Step 2: The Protection & Repair Phase (Days 46-89)

Once the fundamentals are in place, the protocol shifts toward actively helping the body protect itself and begin repairing, under a provider's guidance. This phase has two main components.

Supplements and herbs, including flaxseed, B vitamins, resveratrol, quercetin, milk thistle, turmeric, and vitamin D3/K2, all chosen to support detoxification and reduce inflammation.

Binders, which are a cornerstone of mold treatment. Binders work by attaching to mycotoxins in the gut so they can be safely eliminated from the body rather than reabsorbed. Dr. Mitchell's protocol introduces these carefully, one at a time, starting with:

  1. Bentonite clay
  2. Activated charcoal
  3. Chlorella
  4. A tailored probiotic, which varies by patient
  5. Prescription binders as needed

This phase also incorporates sauna therapy, both dry heat and infrared, to support the body's detox pathways through sweat.

Step 3: The Fight Phase (Day 90)

By day 90, with the foundation built and the body better equipped to detoxify, the protocol moves into direct treatment of the mold itself. This phase, done under a provider's supervision, typically includes:

  • Prescription antifungal medication
  • Nasal sprays to address mold colonization in the sinuses, often an overlooked source of ongoing symptoms

This is the phase where many patients begin to notice real, tangible improvement. That's only possible because the first two phases did the work of preparing the body to respond.

Why the Order Matters

What makes this protocol stand out isn't any single supplement or medication. It's the sequencing. Trying to aggressively treat mold before the body is ready, or before exposure is even removed, can backfire and leave patients feeling worse. Dr. Mitchell's phased approach is designed to avoid that, giving the body time to stabilize before ramping up treatment.
